Overview

Visualization Community PeCan

Focus: UX/UI Design, Design Systems, Data Visualization, Strategic Communication

St. Jude Cloud is St. Jude Children's Research Hospital's platform for sharing genomic and clinical data with scientists around the world. Open access to that data speeds up research in childhood cancer, rare disease, and precision medicine.

I joined the team to bring clarity and cohesion to a suite of complex scientific tools, each used by research scientists, clinicians, engineers, and data analysts.

Challenges

  • Design intuitive, human-centered interfaces for highly complex scientific workflows.

  • Create visual tools that communicate dense genomic data while maintaining scientific integrity.

  • Ensure consistency across multiple products with different technical and stakeholder requirements.

  • Support both everyday users (researchers, clinicians) and strategic audiences (leadership, partners).

Milestones

viz.stjude.cloud

I led the UX and UI design for viz.stjude.cloud, a data visualization platform where researchers explore large-scale pediatric cancer genomics datasets and look for patterns across cohorts. My work focused on simplifying user flows, making the visualizations interactive, and keeping the visuals aligned with how researchers actually work.

pecan.stjude.cloud

I also led design for pecan.stjude.cloud, a diagnostic interface that supports precision medicine by helping clinicians and scientists analyze individual genomic profiles. This tool required a careful balance: maintaining rigorous scientific standards while ensuring the interface was usable by time-constrained clinicians and interdisciplinary teams.

Design System

To bring consistency across products, I implemented and evolved a shared design system in Figma. This system included reusable components, accessible color schemes, and layout patterns that supported collaboration across teams and reduced design-debt over time.

Prototypes and Presentations

Working closely with stakeholders, I helped prototype new features, refine UX strategy, and craft clear, compelling presentations that translated technical complexity into human impact. These narratives supported executive briefings, grant applications, and internal alignment around future product direction.

Branding and Visual Language

To support the broader mission, I contributed to branding initiatives that unified the platform's look and feel across touchpoints, reinforcing St. Jude's values of hope, innovation, and care. Design choices were always rooted in the mission: Finding cures. Saving children.

Outcomes

  • The visualization and diagnostic tools I designed are now used by researchers and clinicians globally to accelerate discoveries in pediatric cancer and other rare diseases.

  • The design system improved collaboration between designers and developers, reducing friction and increasing design velocity.

  • Executive storytelling and brand alignment helped position St. Jude Cloud as a trusted, mission-driven platform at the forefront of pediatric genomics.

Reflection

Designing for St. Jude was more than a technical challenge. It was a deeply meaningful opportunity to contribute to a mission that saves lives. Every design decision carried weight, knowing it could help a scientist uncover a new treatment or a clinician make a more informed diagnosis.

It was a privilege to help shape the tools that support St. Jude's life-saving work.
